Oops I Did My Degree is a planning tool built by a Rutgers student for Rutgers students. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Rutgers University. This page says, in plain words, what Oops I Did My Degree keeps about you, why, who else touches it, and how to delete it.
What we keep
- Your account: your email and your password, stored only as a one-way scrambled hash that no one can read back.
- Your profile: name, campus, school, year, start and graduation terms, and your programs.
- Your record: when you upload a Degree Navigator audit or paste courses, Oops I Did My Degree keeps the courses, grades and requirement status it reads from them. It does not keep the original file, and it does not store your RUID.
- Your plans and choices: planned semesters, weekly schedules, preferences, seat alerts, a GPA you enter and grades you project.
- Advisor conversations, so you can return to them.
- Forum posts, shown to other Oops I Did My Degree users under your first name, last initial and year, or as anonymous if you choose.
- Friends you connect with. Your week (the classes you plan or register for) is shared only with friends you accept, and you can turn sharing off in Settings. Private busy times you add show to friends only as "busy", never their label. Shared plans, the courses you ask to take with someone, invite links you create and requests to add a schedule are seen only by the people in them. Index numbers you import from WebReg are saved as your registered classes.
- Meetups you plan or are invited to: the day, time, place, note and who is going. Only the person who planned it and the friends invited can see it.
- Your profile photo, if you add one. It is stored on our server as a small square picture; we redraw it on upload, which removes camera details and location data. Only signed-in users see it: your friends, and readers of forum posts that carry your name (never next to anonymous posts). Remove it in Settings at any time.
- Issue reports you send: what you wrote, your email only if you give one, the screenshots you attach, and the details you choose to include (the page, app version, browser, screen size and time; your plan details only if you tick that box). Screenshots can show whatever was on your screen, so look at them before you send. We redraw them on upload, which removes camera details and location data, and only our moderators see them. We keep a report until the problem is fixed, or delete it sooner if you ask.
- Technical records: a login cookie, a plan ID in your browser's storage, error reports (the page and the error, not your record) so problems get fixed, and Google Analytics cookies that count visits.
Text messages (SMS)
If you opt in to text seat alerts, we collect your mobile number and your consent. We use them only to send the alerts you asked for, plus verification and opt-in confirmation texts. Twilio delivers them. You can stop texts at any time by replying STOP or by turning off text alerts in Seat alerts. The Text alerts page and the SMS Terms in our Terms of Service explain the program.
We do not sell or share your SMS opt-in data or personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Mobile information will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties.
What we do not do
Oops I Did My Degree does not sell your data or show ads. It never asks for your NetID password and never registers for classes on your behalf.
Visit statistics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which screens are used, so we know what to improve. It receives the name of the screen you open (like "home" or "journey"), your browser and device type, and an approximate location from your IP address. It never receives your name, email, courses, grades, plan or transcript. Advertising features and Google Signals are turned off. You can block it with a browser setting or extension, or with Google's opt-out add-on, and the site works the same.
Who else handles data
- Render hosts our server and database in the United States.
- Anthropic runs the Advisor. When you ask a question, the question and the parts of your plan needed to answer it are sent to Anthropic's API to write the reply.
- Supabase stores Rutgers program requirements and course lists. None of your personal data is stored there.
- Google Fonts provides the typeface; your browser downloads it from Google, which sees your IP address.
- Google Analytics receives visit statistics as described above.
- Rate My Professors and Reddit are looked up by course and professor name to show reviews. Nothing about you is sent.
- Rutgers' public Schedule of Classes supplies courses and sections.
- Resend sends our email: password resets, confirmations and seat alerts.
- Twilio delivers text messages (seat alerts, verification and opt-in confirmation texts) to your mobile number, only if you opt in.
How long it is kept
Until you delete your account. Nightly backups are kept for seven days, so a deletion fully clears from backups within a week. Error reports keep only the newest few hundred. Issue reports and their screenshots are kept until the problem is fixed or you ask us to delete them, and deleting your account deletes them too.
Your choices
You can change your profile and record at any time in Settings. Settings → Delete my account and data removes your account, record, plans, profile photo, meetups you planned and Advisor conversations at once. Forum posts you wrote stay so conversations still make sense, but under "Deleted user" and no longer tied to you; delete individual posts first if you want them gone.
Security
Passwords are hashed, logins are limited after repeated failures, login cookies only travel over HTTPS and cannot be read by page scripts, and the database is backed up nightly. No system is perfectly secure; if Oops I Did My Degree ever learns your data was exposed, it will tell you.
Age
Oops I Did My Degree is for college students and is not directed at children under 13.
